Shark Point

A sand flat off Playa del Carmen where pregnant bull sharks gather every winter.

Depth
~25 m
Level
Advanced recommended
Season
November – March
Type
Ocean · Bull sharks

Every year from around November, bull sharks arrive off this stretch of coast and stay until March. They are almost all pregnant females, and they return to the same water year after year. Nobody fully knows why.

The dive itself is simple: you descend to a sandy bottom at around 25 metres, kneel, and wait. The sharks come to you. There is no wall to hug and no current to fight — the difficulty is entirely psychological, and it disappears in about ninety seconds.

We do not feed, chase, or touch them. Baiting changes their behaviour and puts the next group at risk. What you get instead is an animal behaving normally, close, and completely uninterested in you.

Because Shark Point sits at 25 metres, Advanced Open Water is the sensible standard. If you are Open Water with recent dives, tell us and we will give you an honest answer either way.
