El Pit

The deepest cenote in the Dos Ojos system, and the one with the light beams everybody has seen a photo of.

Depth
~40 m (cavern)
Level
Advanced
Season
Year round · best 10am–12pm
Type
Cenote · Deep cavern

Late morning, when the sun is high, shafts of light drop straight down the shaft and hit the hydrogen sulphide cloud sitting around thirty metres. The cloud looks like a floor made of smoke. Ancient tree trunks stick out of it.

Below the cloud the water goes black and cold. Above it you are in clear fresh water with visibility that seems to go on forever.

This is a deep cavern dive and it needs Advanced certification and good buoyancy. Timing matters more here than anywhere else — go at the wrong hour and the light show simply is not there.
